2003 Manitoba Provincial Bodybuilding and Women's Fitness/Figures Championships report
By Cary Castagna

Dreams do come true. Just ask Cedric Shurraw, Jocelyn Legault-Clark, Christina Mehling and Kim Hilderman. All four MABBA athletes took their competitive careers to a new personal pinnacle June 14, 2003, at the Burton Cummings Theatre in downtown Winnipeg at the 46th annual Manitoba Provincial Bodybuilding and Women’s Fitness/Figures Championships, where they were crowned champions in their respective divisions. Much like the previous 45 provincial contests, this year’s competition was first-rate, attracting 48 of the top physiques from around.

Men’s Bodybuilding

You can’t help but be happy for Cedric Shurraw. The 30-year-old has paid his competitive dues over the past several years. At 5-foot-9 and a contest weight of 190 pounds, Shurraw has a classic physique with pleasing proportions, mind-blowing separation, sizzling striations and the type of full muscle bellies that would make any savvy bodybuilder envious. But since he began competing in 1999, an overall title has been elusive – until now. This time, Shurraw dialed it in perfectly, entering this year’s show in arguably the best shape of his life, and leaving no doubt about where he would stand when the judges’ final votes were tallied.

Shurraw is also extremely modest and will serve as a great spokesman and representative for bodybuilding. In an interview after the contest, Shurraw made sure the first thing he did was give credit to the other bodybuilders with whom he battled it out on the posing dais.

“I admire the athletes that I compete with,” Shurraw said thoughtfully. “Winning my weight class (light heavyweight) was wonderful. Winning the overall is even better.”

An employment counselor in the midst of a career change, Shurraw said the key for him this time out was increasing his cardio. On the dietary side, Shurraw ingested between 350 and 400 grams of muscle-building protein daily during his eight-week pre-contest phase, while not going over 3,000 calories per day.

Shurraw plans to pack on some more quality Grade-A beef before he makes the jump to the national level. Stay tuned.

The other male class winners were: Ruark Lisk (junior), Scott Melville (master), Tom Heffner (grand master), Andrew Opray (bantamweight), Demetri Karavas (lightweight), Bentley Scott (welterweight), Derrick Gottfried (middleweight) and Rob Diakiw (heavyweight). Light heavy runner-up Rob Belisle was named best male poser for his flawless and inspirational posing.
